J. C. "Jake" Barman
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
J.C. "Jake" Barman was one of the pioneers of the Southwest District Livestock Show, helping lay the foundation for what would become one of Louisiana's premier youth livestock events. As County Agent in Jefferson Davis Parish, he joined fellow agricultural leaders and state extension specialists in planning and organizing the very first district livestock show.
Throughout his years of service, Mr. Barman served in numerous leadership roles, including President, Secretary, Treasurer, Auditor, and member of the Board of Governors. His dedication to the success of the livestock show and the development of young people made him a trusted leader and advocate for agricultural education.
Mr. Barman worked closely with livestock exhibitors, helping them secure projects, develop their livestock skills, and learn the responsibilities of animal care and showmanship. His guidance and mentorship helped countless young people achieve success both in and out of the show ring.
In recognition of his lasting impact on the beef program and the youth he inspired, the J.C. Barman Beef Scholarship is awarded annually to the most outstanding beef exhibitor at the Southwest District Livestock Show.
Joseph L. Baronet
Acadia Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Joseph L. Baronet faithfully represented Acadia Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors and played an important role in ensuring the continued success of the organization during challenging times. When funding for show facilities became uncertain, Mr. Baronet worked diligently to secure financial support that allowed the facilities to continue operating until long-term funding solutions could be established.
A dedicated advocate for youth livestock programs, Mr. Baronet devoted countless hours to strengthening opportunities for exhibitors. He was instrumental in the development and expansion of scholarships and premiums, recognizing the importance of rewarding hard work, encouraging participation, and helping young people pursue their educational goals.
Through his leadership, determination, and commitment to the youth of Southwest Louisiana, Joseph L. Baronet helped provide stability and growth for the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the exhibitors it serves.
William Thomas "W.T." Burton
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
William Thomas "W.T." Burton made one of the most significant contributions in the history of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo by donating the land on which Burton Coliseum and its surrounding complex are located. His generosity ensured that generations of young people would have a permanent home to exhibit their livestock projects, compete, learn, and grow.
Mr. Burton also served as a member of the Board of Governors and was a dedicated supporter of youth livestock programs. He demonstrated his commitment to exhibitors by purchasing the Champion Steer at the first Southwest District Livestock Show sale and continued to be a strong supporter of the livestock sale throughout his life.
The lasting impact of his vision and generosity is evident today, as Burton Coliseum remains the home of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and countless other agricultural, educational, and community events. His family's continued support of livestock sales and youth programs further reflects the legacy he established.
Through his leadership, generosity, and commitment to the youth of Southwest Louisiana, W.T. Burton helped create opportunities that continue to benefit generations of exhibitors.
Henry George "Harry" Chalkey, Jr.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Henry George "Harry" Chalkley, Jr. was a dedicated community leader and steadfast supporter of youth throughout Southwest Louisiana. As a longtime member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors, he provided leadership and guidance that helped shape the organization's future and expand opportunities for generations of exhibitors.
Mr. Chalkley served as President of the Board and chaired the Steer Sale Committee for many years. He was instrumental in coordinating community efforts to make Burton Coliseum a reality, serving as a liaison between W.T. Burton and parish government leaders. His leadership was critical in securing local tax support needed to construct and maintain the facility, ensuring a permanent home for livestock exhibitions, rodeos, and youth agricultural programs.
Through his vision and dedication, Burton Coliseum became a lasting asset to Southwest Louisiana and a cornerstone of youth livestock education. In recognition of his many contributions, the Chalkley Room at Burton Coliseum was named in his honor.
Mr. Chalkley's commitment to agriculture, youth development, and community service left a lasting legacy that continues to benefit exhibitors and families across the region.
Charles "C.C." Collet
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Charles "C.C." Collet was one of the visionaries who helped establish the Southwest District Livestock Show. As Calcasieu Parish County Agent, he participated in the original planning meeting with Extension specialists where the concept for the district livestock show was first developed.
Dedicated to creating opportunities for young people, Mr. Collet worked tirelessly to secure local support and recruit community leaders who helped build and sustain the early livestock show. He served as manager of the first district shows, helping lay the foundation for an organization that would benefit generations of 4-H and FFA members across Southwest Louisiana.
Although he later joined Sweetlake Land & Oil Company, Mr. Collet never lost sight of the importance of youth development. His favorite saying, "Building a better world is not done by chart or plan. You start by teaching the boy to be a better man," reflected his lifelong commitment to mentoring young people and helping them develop strong character through agriculture and leadership experiences.
Through his vision, leadership, and dedication to youth, Charles "C.C." Collet helped create and strengthen a program that continues to impact the lives of young people throughout Southwest Louisiana.
Clifton J. Derouen
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Clifton J. Derouen, affectionately known as "Mr. Cliff," was a dedicated agricultural leader and one of the longest-serving members of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors. Over an extraordinary 54 years of service, he played a vital role in the success and growth of the organization.
Mr. Derouen served as Board President and as Chairman of the Sheep Sale Committee, providing steady leadership and unwavering support for youth livestock programs. Each year, he generously contributed equipment and resources to prepare the showgrounds, ensuring exhibitors and visitors had a safe and successful event.
Known for his strong work ethic and commitment to agriculture, Mr. Derouen was always willing to step forward when help was needed. His dedication to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the young people it served earned him the respect and admiration of fellow board members, exhibitors, and community leaders alike.
In recognition of his many contributions, "Mr. Cliff" was honored as Parade Marshal of the Southwest District Livestock Show Parade, a fitting tribute to his decades of service and commitment to the livestock industry and youth of Southwest Louisiana.
Arthur L. Gayle, Sr.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Arthur L. Gayle, Sr. was one of the pioneering leaders whose vision and determination helped establish the Southwest District Livestock Show and create lasting opportunities for the youth of Southwest Louisiana. He was among the agricultural leaders who met with state officials J.W. Bateman and W.T. Cobb to discuss the possibility of bringing a major livestock show to the region.
When plans were being considered for a statewide event elsewhere, Mr. Gayle utilized the influence and support of Southwest Louisiana cattlemen to help secure a district livestock show for the area. His efforts not only contributed to the creation of the Southwest District Livestock Show but also supported the growth and development of agricultural education in the region.
Mr. Gayle provided leadership in important livestock health initiatives, particularly efforts to eradicate tick fever, which improved cattle production and encouraged greater participation in youth livestock programs. He was also instrumental in securing the support of the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association for junior livestock shows, helping strengthen opportunities for young exhibitors throughout the state.
Through his vision, leadership, and commitment to agriculture, Arthur L. Gayle, Sr. helped build a foundation that continues to benefit generations of 4-H and FFA members across Southwest Louisiana.
John E. Jackson
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
John E. Jackson served as the Calcasieu Parish 4-H Agent when the first Southwest District Livestock Show was held and went on to play a key role in its growth and success for many years. As District Show Manager, he worked closely with the Board of Governors to build community and state support for the livestock show and sale, helping establish a strong foundation for the organization.
His leadership allowed the Board to focus more resources on supporting youth through scholarships and exhibitor premiums. In recognition of his dedication to young people and livestock education, the Board named its showmanship scholarships in his honor.
Following his retirement, Mr. Jackson continued serving the organization as Treasurer of the Board and remained actively involved in improving the facilities. One of his most lasting contributions was the installation of the original camper sites at Burton Coliseum. What began as 44 camper spaces has since expanded into a facility that accommodates hundreds of exhibitors and their families each year.
Through his vision, leadership, and commitment to youth, John E. Jackson helped shape the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and created opportunities that continue to benefit generations of 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
Glenn Conway LeBleu
Cameron Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
The Honorable Conway LeBleu was a dedicated advocate for the youth and agricultural community of Southwest Louisiana. Serving as a Louisiana State Representative from 1964 to 1988, he provided critical leadership and support during some of the most challenging times in the history of Burton Coliseum and the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
When funding shortages threatened the future of Burton Coliseum, Representative LeBleu worked tirelessly to secure state funding that kept the facility operating until a local maintenance tax could be approved. His efforts ensured that 4-H and FFA exhibitors would continue to have a home for livestock exhibitions, educational activities, and agricultural events.
In addition to his legislative support, Mr. LeBleu was a generous supporter of the livestock show, contributing prize money and awards for beef exhibitors and encouraging the continued growth of youth agricultural programs throughout the region.
Through his leadership, dedication to public service, and commitment to the youth of Southwest Louisiana, Conway LeBleu helped preserve and strengthen an institution that continues to impact generations of 4-H and FFA members.
Robert J. Marcantel
Evangeline Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Robert J. Marcantel served as the representative for Evangeline Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors for 16 years. During his tenure, he was an active member of both the Executive Committee and the Scholarship Committee, where he worked diligently to expand opportunities for youth exhibitors across Southwest Louisiana.
A strong advocate for education and youth development, Mr. Marcantel played an important role in increasing both the number and value of scholarships awarded by the Board. He recognized the lasting impact these scholarships could have on young people's futures and worked to ensure more exhibitors could benefit from them.
Mr. Marcantel was also dedicated to promoting the livestock show and rodeo throughout his community. Through local media and personal encouragement, he inspired many young people to become involved in livestock projects and participate in the district show. His support and guidance opened doors for numerous exhibitors who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience the benefits of livestock competition.
Through his leadership, advocacy, and commitment to youth, Robert J. Marcantel helped strengthen the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and positively influenced the lives of countless young people throughout the region.
Carroll H. McCall
Cameron Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Carroll H. McCall played an important role in the growth and success of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo from its earliest years. As the Cameron Parish County Agent when the first show was held, he provided leadership, guidance, and encouragement that helped establish a strong foundation for youth livestock programs in Southwest Louisiana.
Throughout his career, Mr. McCall worked closely with young exhibitors and their families, promoting participation in livestock projects and helping develop opportunities for youth in both Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes. His efforts were instrumental in building exhibitor involvement during the show's formative years.
After leaving Extension Service, Mr. McCall continued his support of the livestock show through his business, McCall Farm Supply, and remained actively involved in the organization. He served as President of the Board of Governors and spent many years as Chairman of the Swine Sale Committee, contributing his time, leadership, and expertise to the continued success of the show.
Through his dedication to agriculture, youth development, and community service, Carroll H. McCall helped shape the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo into an organization that continues to benefit generations of 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
C. H. "Buddy" Unkel
Allen Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
C.H. "Buddy" Unkel faithfully represented Allen Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors for many years. During his service, he held several leadership positions, including President, Vice President, and member of the Executive Committee. His dedication and leadership helped guide the organization through important periods of growth and change.
As President, Mr. Unkel led the Board during a time when rodeo attendance was declining. Through his vision and commitment, the rodeo regained popularity, increased attendance, and became more financially successful, strengthening the organization's ability to support youth programs.
Mr. Unkel was also an active member of the Scholarship Committee and a strong advocate for expanding educational opportunities for exhibitors. He supported efforts to increase both the number and value of scholarships awarded, helping more 4-H and FFA members pursue their educational goals.
Through his leadership, dedication, and commitment to youth development, Mr. Unkel helped ensure the continued success of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the
opportunities it provides to young people across Southwest Louisiana.
L.G. "Louie" Wittler
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
L.G. "Louie" Wittler was a devoted member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors from its founding until his death in 1974. Known for his tireless work ethic and willingness to tackle any task, Mr. Louie played a vital role in ensuring the success of the livestock show and rodeo during its formative years.
Following the construction of the McNeese Arena, Mr. Wittler supervised the building of the livestock and rodeo stock pens and served as Chairman of the Grounds Committee. He was responsible for making sure the facilities were prepared each year for exhibitors, livestock, rodeo contestants, and spectators. Whether repairing pens, fixing roof leaks, or addressing maintenance issues, he worked countless hours behind the scenes to ensure everything was ready when show time arrived.
Mr. Louie's dedication never wavered, even after the loss of his right leg left him confined to a wheelchair. Despite this challenge, he continued to oversee preparations and make improvements to the facilities he cared so deeply about.
Known as the man behind the scenes who made the show possible, Mr. Wittler's commitment, perseverance, and selfless service helped build the foundation of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and contributed to its long-term success.
2015 Inductees
John R. Denison
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
John Denison represented Calcasieu Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors for many years, serving on the Executive Committee as Vice President and President. As President from 1977 to 1982, he provided steady leadership during one of the most significant periods of growth and change in the organization's history.
During his tenure, Burton Coliseum was placed into service, bringing new opportunities and challenges for the livestock show and rodeo. Faced with rapid growth in exhibitor participation and the need for facility improvements, Mr. Denison worked tirelessly to secure support for a maintenance millage and state funding to improve and maintain the coliseum.
He also played a key role in addressing scheduling concerns related to livestock shows, helping implement changes that provided greater flexibility for parish events while reducing the amount of school missed by exhibitors. His leadership encouraged greater community involvement and helped guide the organization through a critical stage of development.
Through his vision, dedication, and commitment to youth, Mr. Denison helped establish a strong foundation for continued growth, enabling the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo to become one of the premier events of its kind in Louisiana.
Rudy Faulk
Vermilion Parish |Hall of Fame Inductee
Rudy Faulk's love for the cowboy way of life and his dedication to promoting the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo led to the revival of one of the organization's most cherished traditions. In the early 1980s, Rudy approached the Board with the idea of bringing back the rodeo trail ride, an event that had not been held for many years.
In 1984, through Rudy's leadership and vision, the trail ride was successfully revived. Beginning in Kaplan and traveling across Southwest Louisiana to Burton Coliseum, the ride became a unique way to promote the rodeo while celebrating the region's western heritage. Along the route, activities such as cook-offs, pancake breakfasts, and community gatherings helped generate excitement and support for the rodeo.
Rudy organized and led the annual trail ride until 1997, sharing his passion for the cowboy lifestyle with countless participants and spectators. Although he passed away from cancer in 1998, the tradition he restored continues today, preserving a connection to the spirit and traditions of the Old West.
Rudy Faulk's vision, leadership, and love for western heritage created a lasting legacy that remains an important part of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Uland F. Guidry, Jr.
cameron Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Uland Guidry dedicated his career to the youth of Cameron Parish, first as a 4-H Agent and later as an FFA Advisor. Through his leadership, encouragement, and commitment to excellence, numerous Cameron Parish exhibitors achieved success in livestock projects and competition while developing valuable life skills.
Mr. Guidry began serving on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors in 1984 as the representative for Cameron Parish. During his years of service, he served on the Executive Committee, as Vice President, and as President of the Board from 2010 to 2012. A strong advocate for 4-H and FFA youth, he supported efforts to increase scholarships and premiums, recognizing the impact these opportunities have on helping young people further their education.
Throughout his career, Mr. Guidry worked closely with schools, parents, and exhibitors to ensure students could successfully balance academics with their livestock responsibilities. His leadership helped strengthen opportunities for youth while keeping education a top priority.
Known to many simply as "Coach," Mr. Guidry continues to be respected as a mentor, livestock leader, and advocate for youth development. His lasting influence can be seen in the generations of exhibitors he has guided and inspired throughout Southwest Louisiana.
Herschell H. Hardesty
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Herschell H. Hardesty's involvement with the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo began in the early 1970s when his children exhibited market steers. As a successful businessman and dedicated community leader, he quickly became an enthusiastic supporter of the organization's mission and the opportunities it provided to young people across Southwest Louisiana.
Representing Calcasieu Parish on the Board of Governors, Mr. Hardesty served on the Executive Committee and as President for three years. He was a strong advocate for the livestock show and rodeo, recognizing both the positive impact it had on youth development and its importance to the region's economy.
One of his most significant contributions came during a challenging time when Burton Coliseum was forced to close due to a lack of maintenance funding. Serving on a committee appointed to address the issue, Mr. Hardesty played a key role in helping secure the support and funding needed to reopen the facility in time for the livestock show and rodeo.
Mr. Hardesty also helped lead the search for a new rodeo producer when declining revenues threatened the organization's growth. The relationship and improvements established during his leadership provided increased financial stability, helping expand scholarship opportunities and strengthen support for 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
Through his vision, leadership, and dedication, Herschell H. Hardesty helped ensure the continued success and growth of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo for future generations.
James Harper
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
James Harper served as Rodeo Producer for the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo beginning in 1983, helping transform the event into one of the premier rodeos in the region. A native of Southwest Louisiana, he was deeply committed to ensuring the success of both the rodeo and the youth programs it supported.
Under Mr. Harper's leadership, the rodeo became known for its quality performances, family-friendly entertainment, and unique attractions. He introduced specialty acts and local favorites, including the popular Cajun Buddy Barrel Pickup, helping create an event that attracted generations of fans.
His support extended beyond the rodeo arena. When the need arose for sponsors to provide trophy buckles for showmanship and market animal champions, Mr. Harper stepped forward and generously donated them, continuing that support for many years. He also worked closely with show management and the Board to accommodate changing schedules and growing participation in the livestock show.
Recognized as one of the nation's leading professional rodeo producers, James Harper never lost sight of the importance of his hometown rodeo and the opportunities it provided to the youth of Southwest Louisiana. His dedication, generosity, and commitment helped strengthen the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and left a lasting impact on countless 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
E. W. Hayes
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
E. W. Hayes represented Jefferson Davis Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors for many years, serving as Vice President, a member of the Executive Committee, and on both the Rodeo and Ticket Committees. In 1982 and 1983, he served as President of the Board and holds the distinction of being the first Board President from outside Calcasieu Parish.
Mr. Hayes' dedication to the organization grew from witnessing the positive impact that livestock projects and youth programs had on his own children. A strong advocate for education, he championed the expansion of scholarship opportunities and established a scholarship endowment in memory of his son, Mark Hayes. He was also instrumental in creating the Participation Scholarship program, which continues to recognize graduating seniors each year.
Serving during a period of significant growth, Mr. Hayes provided progressive leadership that helped strengthen the livestock show and increase opportunities for 4-H and FFA exhibitors throughout Southwest Louisiana. Even after leaving the Board, he remained a loyal supporter of the organization and its mission.
Through his leadership, vision, and commitment to youth, E. W. Hayes helped make a lasting difference in the lives of countless exhibitors across the region.
John B. Meaux
Cameron Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
John B. Meaux proudly represented the exhibitors of Cameron Parish on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors for 27 years, serving from 1979 to 2006. During his tenure, he served on numerous committees, including the Rodeo, Scholarship, and Ticket Committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee. He also served as Board President from 1997 to 1999, becoming the first president from Cameron Parish.
As President, Mr. Meaux emphasized active committee involvement and strong communication among Board members, helping ensure the organization operated efficiently and effectively. Despite the distance from Cameron Parish to Lake Charles, he remained committed to attending meetings and supporting the work of the Board.
A respected leader, Mr. Meaux was known for making decisions based on what was best for 4-H and FFA exhibitors. Under his leadership, the Board increased exhibitor premiums and expanded support for youth participating in the livestock show. His dedication extended beyond the showgrounds, as he often sponsored livestock projects for young people who otherwise could not afford to participate.
Through his leadership, generosity, and commitment to youth, John B. Meaux helped strengthen the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and create opportunities for generations of exhibitors.
C. D. Myers
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
C. D. Myers has a long and distinguished history with the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, dating back to his years as a youth exhibitor. He exhibited both beef and sheep projects in some of the organization's earliest shows and earned the distinction of being the first Grand Champion Market Lamb exhibitor at the district sheep show.
As a member of the Board of Governors representing Jefferson Davis Parish, Mr. Myers was a dedicated advocate for livestock exhibitors and actively supported beef and sheep programs throughout Southwest Louisiana. He was well known for his willingness to help wherever needed, often handling the behind-the-scenes tasks that are essential to conducting a successful livestock show.
Whether opening gates, checking entries, assisting exhibitors, or helping show management, Mr. Myers consistently put the needs of exhibitors first. His commitment to service, attention to detail, and passion for youth development made him a valuable asset to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo for many years.
Even today, Mr. Myers continues to support the district show, lending his time and expertise to help ensure exhibitors have a positive and successful experience.
S. T. Self
Beauregard Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
S. T. Self was a respected leader, mentor, and advocate for youth livestock programs throughout Southwest Louisiana. As a 4-H Agent and County Agent in Beauregard Parish, he dedicated countless hours to helping young people develop their livestock projects while teaching the values of hard work, responsibility, and sportsmanship.
Mr. Self served the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo in numerous capacities, most notably as Breeding Sheep Show Superintendent and Sheep Showmanship Superintendent for more than 20 years. He also served on various livestock show committees, where he earned a reputation for fairness, sound judgment, and a commitment to providing every exhibitor with a positive experience.
Known for his sense of humor and calm demeanor, Mr. Self had a unique ability to resolve challenges and bring people together. His leadership helped ensure that livestock shows were conducted fairly and efficiently while keeping the best interests of exhibitors at the forefront.
Through his guidance and encouragement, participation from Beauregard Parish grew significantly, and generations of youth benefited from his willingness to go the extra mile. Lafayette f. "Teeny" Swoope, Jr.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Lafayette F. "Teeny" Swoope, Jr. devoted his career to the development of youth and agriculture in Southwest Louisiana. Beginning in 1967, he served Calcasieu Parish as a 4-H Agent and later as an Agricultural Agent until his retirement in 1989. In 1977, he became Manager of the Southwest District Livestock Show and later served as Calcasieu Parish Chairman, providing leadership during a period of tremendous growth for the organization.
Following his retirement, Mr. Swoope continued his service as a member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Governors representing Calcasieu Parish. Few individuals have experienced the livestock show from as many perspectives as Mr. Swoope, serving as a parent of exhibitors, a 4-H agent, livestock show manager, and board member.
While he deeply appreciated quality livestock, Mr. Swoope believed the greatest value of livestock projects was the opportunity they provided to develop young people. He understood the importance of teaching responsibility, leadership, and work ethic and was known for seeing potential in every child.
During his tenure as Show Manager, the Southwest District Livestock Show grew into the largest and one of the most competitive livestock shows in Louisiana, a distinction it continues to hold today. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to youth helped shape generations of livestock exhibitors and strengthened the foundation of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Gene Louis Wittler
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Gene Louis Wittler's connection to the Southwest District Livestock Show began as a youth exhibitor, showing a market steer in the very first district livestock show. What began as a participant's experience evolved into a lifetime of leadership and service to the organization and the youth it serves.
Representing Calcasieu Parish on the Board of Governors, Mr. Wittler served as Board President from 1970 to 1975 and contributed to numerous committees during his tenure. Beyond the Board, he played a pivotal role in the development of Burton Coliseum, chairing the planning committee and helping secure the land donation from W. T. Burton. He later became the facility's first director.
Under his leadership, Burton Coliseum became a premier venue for agricultural and youth events, hosting 4-H and FFA activities, high school rodeos, collegiate rodeos, and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals. His commitment to young people extended beyond agriculture through his work with the Calcasieu Juvenile Detention Center and other community initiatives. His dedication to youth development was recognized with his induction into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame.
Although he contributed to many worthwhile causes, Mr. Wittler's greatest passion remained the Southwest District Livestock Show and the opportunities it provided to generations of young exhibitors. His vision, leadership, and commitment helped shape the organization into the success it is today.
2016 Inductees
Joe A. Bond
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Joe A. Bond devoted his life to supporting agriculture, education, and the youth of Southwest Louisiana. As Calcasieu Parish 4-H Agent from 1942 to 1947, he helped build participation in the Southwest District Fat Stock Show during its formative years and continued coordinating the livestock sale through 1972.
Beginning in 1962, Mr. Bond served the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo in numerous leadership roles, including Rodeo Chairman, Executive Secretary, First Vice President, and President. He was also instrumental in securing support for Burton Coliseum and served on several state and local livestock and rodeo organizations.
A strong advocate for 4-H and FFA youth, Mr. Bond represented Southwest Louisiana exhibitors on the LSU Junior Livestock Show Committee and was recognized as Director Emeritus of the Southwest District Fat Stock Show & Rodeo in 1977. His service also extended to the community through his work on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
Remembered for his integrity, leadership, and dedication to young people, Joe A. Bond helped create opportunities that benefited generations of youth across Southwest Louisiana.
Stephen V.S. Coleman, Sr.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Stephen V. S. Coleman, Sr. served as a member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors representing Calcasieu Parish from 1975 to 2008. During his tenure, he played a key role in improving the exhibitor experience, particularly through the development and growth of the camper facilities at Burton Coliseum.
Recognizing the need for accommodations for exhibitors and their families, the Board established camper sites that eventually expanded from 44 sites to nearly 300. As Chairman of the Camper Committee for more than 30 years, Mr. Coleman oversaw camper assignments, maintained facilities, and worked to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for livestock show participants and their families.
In addition to serving on the Junior Livestock Sales Committee, Mr. Coleman was recognized for his dedication to youth through the 4-H Outstanding Service Award and the 4-H Livestock Project Outstanding Service Award. His commitment to community service also included serving on the Calcasieu Parish School Board, co-founding the Bell City Little League program, and supporting numerous agricultural, educational, and charitable organizations.
Through his leadership, service, and unwavering support of 4-H and FFA youth, Mr. Coleman helped enhance the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and create a better experience for generations of exhibitors.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Carol Meaux
Carol Meaux dedicated countless hours to promoting the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and enhancing the experience for rodeo fans, exhibitors, and families throughout Southwest Louisiana. As co-owner of Meaux's Western Wear, she and her family sponsored rodeo events for more than 30 years and became strong advocates for the organization's mission.
Always looking for ways to support and grow rodeo traditions, Carol revived the Miss Rodeo Louisiana Fashion Show and coordinated and sponsored the event from 1986 to 1996. Her passion for youth inspired her to create and sponsor the popular "Stick Horse Rodeo," giving young cowboys and cowgirls an opportunity to experience the excitement of rodeo competition.
Carol also served as chairman of the annual Rodeo Parade for more than 20 years, organizing participants, coordinating the parade route, and showcasing the rich western heritage of Southwest Louisiana. Her efforts to preserve and promote rodeo traditions earned her the Rudy Faulk Memorial Award in 2011.
Known for her enthusiasm, generosity, and welcoming smile, Carol played an important role in the success and promotion of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo. She holds the distinction of being the first woman inducted into the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Hall of Fame.
Edward J. Stine
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Edward J. Stine was one of the original leaders of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, serving on the Board of Directors for an extraordinary 44 years from 1942 to 1986. A man known for his quiet leadership and strong actions, Mr. Stine played a pivotal role in shaping the organization and expanding opportunities for the youth of Southwest Louisiana.
As Chairman of the Rodeo Committee from 1947 to 1978, he helped transform the rodeo from a local amateur event into one of the premier PRCA rodeos in the nation. Under his leadership, the first scholarship program for livestock show participants was established in 1950, laying the foundation for the scholarships and awards that continue to benefit 4-H and FFA exhibitors today.
Mr. Stine also served as Vice President, Interim President, President, and a longtime member of the Executive Committee. A dedicated cattleman and Quarter Horse breeder, he generously supported exhibitors by providing transportation to state livestock shows, purchasing livestock at junior sales, and recruiting other buyers to support youth participants.
Beyond the livestock show and rodeo, Mr. Stine was a respected agricultural leader who served as President of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Association and promoted the growth of agriculture throughout the region.
Through his vision, generosity, and lifelong commitment to youth, Edward J. Stine helped build the foundation of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and will always be remembered as one of its true pioneers.
2017 Inductees
Lester Langley
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
In the mid-1980s, as the Southwest District Fat Stock Show Board transitioned to its new home at Burton Coliseum, the organization recognized the need for individuals with strong financial and promotional expertise to help support the continued growth of the livestock show and rodeo. In 1986, Lester Langley was asked to join the Board, and his acceptance marked the beginning of many years of dedicated leadership and service.
Although Mr. Langley did not come from a livestock show background, he quickly recognized the value of the opportunities the organization provided to the youth of Southwest Louisiana through scholarships and exhibitor premiums. He became especially committed to strengthening the scholarship program and ensuring it could better meet the increasing costs of higher education. After reviewing scholarship accounts, Mr. Langley identified funds that had been designated for scholarships that were unlikely to be claimed. Through extensive research and follow-up with past recipients, he helped make these funds available for future use. His efforts played a significant role in increasing both the value of scholarships awarded and the number of students who could benefit from them.
During his years of service, Mr. Langley served as President of the Board from 1993 to 1995. He also held several other leadership roles, including Treasurer, Auditor, member of the Finance Committee, Scholarship Committee, Executive Committee, and Board member representing Calcasieu Parish.
Mr. Langley's dedication, financial expertise, and commitment to supporting youth opportunities helped strengthen the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and expand its scholarship program for future generations. His leadership and service have left a lasting legacy on the organization and the young people it serves.
Robert C. McCall
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Robert McCall gained a firsthand understanding of the dedication and effort required to produce the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo through his family's deep involvement with the organization. His father was one of the show's Founding Fathers and a member of the inaugural class inducted into the Hall of Fame.
In 1970, Mr. McCall began his own remarkable legacy of service when he became Executive Secretary of the Board. For the next 34 years, he provided invaluable guidance and leadership as the organization continued to grow and evolve. His responsibilities included overseeing important administrative matters, reviewing contracts, and representing the Board's interests in rodeo contract negotiations.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. McCall helped guide the organization through significant changes, including transitions in Board leadership and the renaming of the organization from the Southwest District Fat Stock Show to the Southwest District Livestock Show, Inc. His attention to detail and knowledge of organizational governance helped ensure these changes were completed properly while preserving the Board's nonprofit status.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Mr. McCall devoted countless hours to protecting and strengthening the organization. His steady leadership and commitment helped establish a solid foundation that allowed the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo to expand opportunities for the youth of Southwest Louisiana through scholarships, premiums, and educational programs.
Mr. McCall's willingness to share his time, expertise, and leadership over more than three decades played a vital role in the continued success of the organization. His contributions helped create opportunities for generations of young people and left a lasting impact on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Dr. Robert L. McManus
Acadia Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Dr. Robert L. McManus dedicated 20 years of service to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board as the representative for Acadia Parish. Throughout his tenure, he served on numerous committees, including as Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, where his leadership helped transform and significantly expand the organization's scholarship program.
When Dr. McManus assumed leadership of the Scholarship Committee, only six scholarships were awarded annually. Recognizing the importance of supporting youth beyond the show ring, he championed the creation of additional scholarships for graduating seniors based on essays and personal interviews. Today, the scholarship program awards 24 scholarships totaling $31,000, a testament to his vision and dedication.
Dr. McManus also served as Board President from 1995 to 1997, Vice President, and a member of the Executive Committee. Beyond the district show, he has been a respected community leader, serving as an Acadia Parish School Board member, Parish Coroner, Chairman of the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, and a continuing representative for Southwest Louisiana on the Foundation.
A lifelong advocate for 4-H, FFA, and youth livestock programs, Dr. McManus has left a lasting legacy through his commitment to education, leadership, and the development of future generations.
2018 Inductees
James "Jim" Miller
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
James “Jim” Miller dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo as a Board member representing Calcasieu Parish. A former livestock exhibitor himself, Jim understood firsthand the impact that livestock projects can have on young people and devoted his time to ensuring exhibitors had every opportunity to succeed.
Throughout his years of service, Jim was known for his willingness to help wherever needed. He served as auctioneer for numerous livestock sales, including the Southwest District Sale of Champions, and worked closely with parish livestock programs across the region. He also helped secure favorable resale prices for market animals, allowing exhibitors to receive greater returns for their hard work and investment.
Jim's passion for helping youth stemmed from his own experiences as a young exhibitor. He often shared the story of taking a taxi to a livestock show because he had no one available to transport his hog, a memory that shaped his commitment to helping others. Whether providing transportation, volunteering his time, or offering encouragement, Jim consistently went the extra mile for 4-H and FFA members.
Through his leadership, generosity, and dedication to youth development, Jim left a lasting mark on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the countless exhibitors and families he supported throughout the years.
George Lock Paret, Sr.
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
George Lock Paret, Sr. was a visionary leader whose service to agriculture, youth, and the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo left a lasting impact on Southwest Louisiana. Representing Calcasieu Parish on the Board of Governors from 1955 to 1978, he dedicated more than two decades to supporting opportunities for 4-H and FFA members while helping guide the growth and success of the organization.
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Paret served on numerous committees and was a strong advocate for the District Show and Sale within the community. As Chairman of the Beef Show and Sale Committee, he helped raise thousands of dollars for youth exhibitors and worked tirelessly to promote participation and support for agricultural education programs.
Beyond his contributions to Southwest District, Mr. Paret was widely recognized for his leadership in agriculture. He managed a nationally and internationally acclaimed Brahman cattle operation and served as President of the American Brahman Breeders Association. A strong proponent of reforestation and responsible land stewardship, he demonstrated how timber production and cattle ranching could successfully coexist, establishing a model for other landowners throughout the region.
Mr. Paret's commitment to service extended beyond agriculture. He served as President of the Calcasieu Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was instrumental in the donation of land for Camp Edgewood, benefiting generations of young people.
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Mr. Paret was named Board Emeritus of the Southwest District Livestock Show Board of Governors, one of only three individuals to receive this distinguished honor.
2022 Inductees
Blain Crochet
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Blain Crochet has been a member of the Board since 2002. He has been very active since he got on the board. He has served on the promotion and activity committees serving as chairman since 2005. He was co-chair of the Rodeo Parade with Carol Meaux until her untimely death and has organized and run it smoothly for over 15 years. Blain has served as President of the organization from 2015-2017. During this time, he helped secure new contracts while undergoing changes with Burton Complex from McNeese to the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.
He has helped re-organize the trail ride and brought it back to prominence during the Southwest District Rodeo and Parade. He has actively promoted Western Heritage Days across the City of Lake Charles. Blain has helped find sponsors for the parade and trail ride and worked to secure many acts to entertain us at the Rodeo. For the 75th Anniversary, he helped secure the actor, Buck Taylor, from Gunsmoke.
Blain has also assisted the 4-H youth Horse Club each year, helping to organize a behind the scenes tour of how a rodeo is run. This year he organized a new addition to the rodeo, a “Mutton Bustin” contest for younger youth.
He and his wife, DeAnna has 5 children, Marcus, Heather, Phillip, Sarah, and Sadie. Blain has worked tirelessly to make sure the rodeo was a success because he believes that 4-H and FFA youth greatly benefit from the scholarships and premiums
David Habetz
Beauregard Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
David Habetz is a former Beauregard Parish 4-H member whose experiences raising and exhibiting livestock helped shape a lifelong commitment to agriculture and youth development. Today, he is a successful rice farmer and cattle rancher in Ragley, Louisiana, and a respected leader within the livestock community.
Appointed to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors in 1993, David has devoted more than three decades of service to the organization. He served two terms as President from 2005 to 2007, providing leadership during a period of growth and advancement. Under his leadership, rodeo ticket pricing was restructured, increasing revenue and allowing the organization to expand scholarship opportunities for youth exhibitors.
David has been a longtime supporter of the Southwest District Scholarship Program, serving on multiple scholarship committees and helping increase both the value and availability of
scholarships for deserving students. He also played a key role in establishing the annual awards ceremony that recognizes scholarship recipients and outstanding livestock exhibitors for their achievements.
In addition to serving on the Executive Committee and Hall of Fame Committee, David is the longest-tenured member of the Executive Committee. His experience, leadership, and institutional knowledge continue to be valuable resources for new board members and future leaders of the organization.
David and his wife, Andrea, have been married for 46 years and are the proud parents of four children, Adrienne, Alanna, Adam, and Alexis, all of whom participated in 4-H and FFA livestock projects.
Kirby "Kent" LeDoux
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Kirby “Kent” LeDoux has dedicated more than four decades of service to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, serving as a Board member representing Calcasieu Parish from 1979 to 2021. A graduate of Sulphur High School, McNeese State University, and the LSU Agricultural Leadership Program, Kent also proudly served his country as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Captain.
Throughout his 42 years on the Board, Kent served on numerous committees and played a vital role in supporting youth development through agriculture. He chaired the Nominating Committee, served as a Scholarship Committee judge for more than 30 years, and helped organize the first Southwest District Calf Scramble Contest. Passionate about equine education, Kent taught roping, riding, and horsemanship skills to more than 100 young people through the Southwest District Horse Show program, while also donating calves for roping clinics and horse show events for many years.
In recognition of his support for youth livestock exhibitors, Kent was named Honorary Sales Chairman by Calcasieu 4-H in 2004. He recently retired after 48 years as Ranch Manager of the historic Gray Ranch, where he built a legacy of leadership, stewardship, and service.
Kent's commitment to agriculture, education, and youth has left a lasting impact on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the generations of exhibitors he mentored and encouraged throughout the years.
Jerry Whatley
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Jerry Whatley dedicated more than 35 years to the LSU AgCenter and the development of youth through the 4-H program. He served as a 4-H Agent in Calcasieu Parish from 1974 to 1983 and continued supporting youth programs throughout his tenure as Calcasieu Parish County Agent until his retirement in 2009.
Jerry served as Manager of the Southwest District Livestock Show from 1989 to 2002 and as advisor to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors from 1989 to 2008. In 2009, he joined the Board of Directors and played a key role in establishing the Southwest District Hall of Fame. Since its inception, he has served as chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee, helping recognize and preserve the legacy of the individuals who built and strengthened the organization.
Throughout his career, Jerry was a tireless advocate for 4-H and FFA youth. He worked closely with the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury in the early 1990s to support a millage that funded construction of a new Parish AgCenter office and improvements to the Burton Coliseum Complex, investments that continue to benefit youth programs today.
His dedication has been recognized through numerous honors, including being named the 2013 Honorary Sales Chairman of the Calcasieu Junior Livestock Sale and induction into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame in 2020. Even in retirement, Jerry continues mentoring young people and supporting livestock projects in his community.
Jerry and his wife, Kathy, raised four children, Nicole, Jordan, Josh, and Jake, who all participated in the livestock program. Through his lifelong commitment to youth development, Jerry has witnessed firsthand the lasting lessons and opportunities livestock projects provide to generations of young people.

William "allen" Hogan
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
William “Allen” Hogan has dedicated more than 45 years to serving Louisiana agriculture, youth, and livestock programs through the LSU AgCenter. He began his career as a 4-H Agent in Evangeline Parish in 1980 before serving as County Agent in Jefferson Davis Parish until 2012. Following retirement, Allen continued his commitment to agriculture by coordinating Louisiana’s Master Farmer Program and later returned to the Jefferson Davis Parish Extension Office to assist local agents, livestock producers, and 4-H members.
Throughout his career, Allen has played a vital role in the success of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo. He served as Superintendent of the Southwest District and LSU State Dairy Shows for more than 35 years and as Co-Superintendent of the Southwest District Beef Show for over three decades. His leadership was instrumental in the growth and development of youth dairy projects throughout the region, and he has served as a respected dairy judge at numerous parish livestock shows across Louisiana.
Allen has also contributed extensively to livestock evaluation and classification programs, assisting with the classification of commercial heifers and steers at district and state livestock shows. Remarkably, he has never missed assisting with a Southwest District Livestock Show during his entire career, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the youth and families he serves.
Through decades of leadership, mentorship, and service, Allen has helped shape the success of countless young exhibitors and strengthened livestock programs across Southwest Louisiana.
Thomas "Tommy" H. Shields
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Thomas “Tommy” H. Shields, III dedicated more than three decades of service to youth and agriculture through the LSU AgCenter and the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo. Beginning his career as a 4-H Agent in Calcasieu Parish in 1981, Tommy served for many years as manager of the Calcasieu Parish Livestock Show and Sale and as Superintendent of the Southwest District Beef Show before becoming Manager of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo in 2000. He served in that role until his retirement in 2015 and continues his involvement today as a member of the Board of Directors.
Throughout his tenure, Tommy worked tirelessly to improve facilities and resources for exhibitors. He helped secure new swine pens, assisted in the design of horse stalls that are still in use today, and obtained funding for equipment that continues to support livestock operations at Burton Coliseum.
One of Tommy's greatest leadership challenges came in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita in 2005. Working alongside Extension agents and volunteers, he helped ensure the Southwest District Livestock Show continued despite extensive damage and disruptions throughout the region. Through long hours of planning, repairs, and coordination, Tommy helped provide a sense of normalcy for hundreds of 4-H and FFA members during a difficult time, resulting in a successful seven-day livestock show.
Tommy's leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to youth development have left a lasting impact on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the generations of exhibitors, volunteers, and families he has served.
Richard Dean "Rick" Shetler

Richard Dean “Rick” Shetler, a native of Crowley, Louisiana, built a successful career in the food service industry after choosing a different path from his family's automobile business. Following experience with Chart House and Luther's Barbeque, Rick opened his first Mr. Gatti's Pizza restaurant in Lake Charles in the early 1980s. Through innovation and entrepreneurial vision, he expanded the business and established it as a longtime success in Southwest Louisiana.
Since 2002, Rick has been a dedicated supporter of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo. For more than two decades, he has generously supported the Western Heritage Trail Ride by providing meals to trail riders along the route. Whether at a planned stop or a remote location, Rick has willingly transported and operated his mobile kitchen to serve participants, never asking for anything in return.
In addition to his support of Southwest District, Rick has contributed to numerous 4-H and FFA livestock events throughout Southwest Louisiana, helping promote youth involvement in agriculture and livestock programs. His generosity, community spirit, and commitment to supporting youth have made a lasting impact on countless exhibitors, volunteers, and families.
Rick resides in Lake Charles with his wife, Sharon. They have two children and two grandchildren.
2024 Inductees
Glen Daigle
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Glenn Daigle has been a dedicated supporter of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo for many years, both as a sponsor through Rabideaux's Sausage Kitchen and as a passionate advocate for preserving Western heritage. In 2011, he took on a new role by spearheading the creation of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Heritage Ride.
An avid trail rider since the 1970s, Glenn drew from his extensive experience with local riding organizations and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Trail Ride program to establish Southwest District's own Heritage Ride. He developed the ride's rules and regulations, worked with local officials to obtain approval for horses within city limits, and helped build the event into a valued tradition. Glenn continues to serve as Trail Boss, providing leadership and ensuring the success of the ride each year.
Since joining the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors in 2013, Glenn has remained committed to promoting the organization and its mission. His contributions have been recognized through the Rudy Faulk Memorial Award and a special recognition from Harper & Morgan Rodeo for his dedication to promoting the rodeo.
Through his leadership, vision, and passion for Western heritage, Glenn has helped create opportunities for riders, exhibitors, and families while preserving traditions that are an important part of Southwest Louisiana's culture.
Thomas Deshotel
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Thomas Deshotel has been involved in trail riding for most of his life. Growing up in Jefferson Davis Parish, he rode with Adam Chesson and Floyd Carrier, both of whom participated in the historic Rudy Faulk weeklong trail rides. After spending several years riding on wagons, Thomas transitioned to horseback and continues to enjoy the tradition today.
Thomas has been involved with the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Western Heritage Trail Ride since its inception and was a strong advocate for bringing the ride back when it was reestablished. In addition to participating as a rider, he has devoted countless hours to organizing and working the event. Whether directing traffic, assisting riders, or handling whatever needs arise, Thomas has always been committed to ensuring a safe and successful trail ride experience.
In recognition of his dedication and efforts to promote the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, Thomas was honored with the Rudy Faulk Memorial Award. He also enjoys trail riding in the Caney Mountain Horse Camp area of Arkansas, where he currently resides.
Thomas is the proud father of two children, Dana and Spencer, and grandfather to six grandchildren. His passion for trail riding and commitment to preserving Western heritage have made a lasting impact on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Vernon W. McCain
Cameron Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Vernon W. McCain devoted more than 58 years to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo as an exhibitor, parent, grandparent, 4-H leader, FFA advisor, and agricultural educator. A lifelong resident of the Lake Charles area, Vernon spent 44 years teaching agriculture in Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Calcasieu Parishes, impacting the lives of countless young people through agricultural education and leadership development.
His involvement with Southwest District began as a youth exhibitor and continued as the parent of six livestock exhibitors. Over the years, he mentored hundreds of 4-H and FFA members, encouraging their growth both in and out of the show ring. Vernon also served on the Southwest District Show Committee from 1975 to 1998, helping guide and strengthen the organization during a pivotal period of its history.
Beyond Southwest District, Vernon provided leadership to numerous agricultural organizations. He served as President of the Louisiana Hereford Association, Advisor to the Louisiana Junior Hereford Association, and held positions with the Louisiana State Fair Board, Cal-Cam Fair Board, Cameron Parish Farm Bureau, and local cattlemen's associations. He was also a dedicated advisor and supporter of high school rodeo programs.
Through a lifetime of service to youth, agriculture, and education, Vernon left a lasting legacy that continues to influence generations of exhibitors and agricultural leaders. He and his wife, Jolene, shared 61 years of marriage and raised six children: Lex, Curt, Wade, Candace, Kerri, and Maureen.
Robert Gus Miller
Evangeline Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Gus Miller dedicated his career to agricultural education and youth development, serving as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor in Evangeline Parish for seven years before spending 21 years as Louisiana State FFA Director. Throughout his career, he was a passionate advocate for youth involved in livestock projects and agricultural leadership.
A familiar presence at the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, Gus was known for his willingness to help wherever needed. Whether organizing breed classes in the make-up arena, assisting in the cattle ring, or lending a hand with sheep, goats, and swine exhibits, he worked tirelessly to ensure exhibitors had the support they needed to succeed.
Gus served on the Southwest District Livestock Show Committee for more than 20 years and played an important role in the continued growth and success of the organization. In recognition of his contributions to agricultural education, he was inducted into the Louisiana Agricultural Teachers Hall of Fame and received the Honorary FFA Degree for his exceptional service.
His legacy continues through the countless students, exhibitors, and agricultural leaders he mentored throughout his career. Today, his impact is honored annually through the Gus Miller Memorial Award, presented at the Evangeline Parish Livestock Show to an outstanding cattle exhibitor competing in premier exhibitor and showmanship contests.
Gregory L. Monier
Evangeline Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Gregory L. Monier's involvement in the livestock industry began as a youth in Evangeline Parish through his participation in 4-H and FFA livestock projects. His commitment to youth agriculture continued as he supported his own children in livestock programs and remains strong today through his ongoing service to the livestock community.
Greg has served as Chairman of the Evangeline Parish Livestock Executive Committee and has been a member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors for more than 23 years. During his tenure as Board President from 2014 to 2015, he negotiated key long-term contracts that continue to provide stability and direction for the organization. He also helped reintroduce the Parade of Champions during rodeo performances, highlighting the accomplishments of youth exhibitors.
A passionate advocate for education, Greg served on the Southwest District Scholarship Committee for many years, including as Chairman from 2005 to 2014. During that time, he expanded scholarship opportunities, increased scholarship funding, and developed the scoring system used in the scholarship selection process. Helping provide educational opportunities for youth remains one of the most rewarding aspects of his service.
Recognized as the Evangeline Parish 4-H Foundation Outstanding Male Volunteer in 2008, Greg has dedicated his life to supporting young people and strengthening agricultural programs. He and his wife, Tricia, are the proud parents of Michelle and Samuel and grandparents of six grandchildren.
2025 Inductees
Blaine Landry
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Blaine Landry has been dedicated to the Western Heritage Trail Ride and the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo for much of his life. Raised in a family with a strong tradition of trail riding, Blaine developed a love for the sport through his parents and grandparents and has remained committed to preserving that heritage for future generations.
Blaine became actively involved with the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Western Heritage Trail Ride in 2002 and played an instrumental role in helping reestablish the event. In 2004, he became president of the W & L Trail Riders Club, an organization that helped sponsor and support the ride. Throughout the years, Blaine has volunteered countless hours, including helping direct traffic and ensuring the safety of riders and participants along the route.
In recognition of his dedication and efforts to promote the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, Blaine was honored as a recipient of the Rudy Faulk Memorial Award.
A native of Lacassine and current resident of Iowa, Louisiana, Blaine continues to support the trail riding tradition whenever his work schedule allows. He is the proud father of three children, Justin, Natalie, and Linee, and grandfather to three grandchildren.
Norman Wertz
beauregard Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Norman Wertz devoted more than four decades to supporting youth livestock programs in Beauregard Parish and across Southwest Louisiana. Beginning in the mid-1970s, he became a respected leader, volunteer, and advocate for 4-H and FFA members, helping countless young people develop their skills and achieve success through livestock projects.
Norman served on numerous livestock advisory committees and was an active member of the Beauregard Parish Fair Board, serving as President from 1980 to 1982. He also helped organize the Beauregard Junior Livestock Association, which provided valuable support to local youth involved in livestock programs.
Representing Beauregard Parish on the Southwest District Fat Stock Show Board from 1978 to 2012, Norman played an integral role in planning and conducting the annual show for more than 30 years. Alongside his family, he raised Polled Hereford cattle and market hogs, providing quality livestock to youth exhibitors for parish, district, state, and national competitions for nearly 40 years.
Through his leadership, mentorship, and dedication to agriculture, Norman positively impacted generations of young livestock exhibitors. Though he passed away in 2015, his legacy continues through the many lives he influenced and the programs he helped build.
Mike Wittler
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Mike Wittler has been a dedicated member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors since 1985, making him the longest-serving active board member. He continues a proud family tradition of service established by his father, Gene Wittler, and grandfather, L.G. Lousie, both of whom also served on the board and were inducted into the Southwest District Hall of Fame.
Throughout his nearly four decades of service, Mike has been committed to strengthening and promoting the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo. He has played key roles in numerous projects and initiatives, including assisting with the transition of Burton Coliseum management, helping coordinate Western Heritage Days events, chairing the Hall of Fame Committee, and leading the organization's 75th Diamond Anniversary Celebration. He also served as President of the Board from 2011 to 2014.
Known for his willingness to serve wherever needed, Mike has worked tirelessly to ensure the continued success and visibility of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo within the community. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to youth and agriculture have left a lasting impact on the organization and the families it serves.
2026 Inductees
Mike Doise
Jefferson Davis Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Mike Doise, a lifelong resident of Elton, Louisiana, dedicated 27 years of service to the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo, representing Jeff Davis Parish from 1980 until his retirement in 2007.
As a member of the original Scholarship Committee, he worked tirelessly to provide educational opportunities for youth while helping guide the growth and success of the organization. A strong advocate for agriculture and youth development, Mike collaborated with Extension agents, FFA instructors, parents, volunteers, and local businesses to strengthen the Livestock Show and Rodeo. His leadership earned the respect of his community, and he was repeatedly nominated without opposition by the Jeff Davis Parish Livestock Advisory Committee.
Beyond Southwest District, Mike served on the Jefferson Davis Parish School Board from 1977 to 1998 and was a charter member of several rice grower organizations. He and his wife raised five children who exhibited livestock, and their ten grandchildren have continued the family's tradition of participation in livestock shows at the parish, district, state, and national levels.
Known for his generosity and commitment to helping young people succeed, Mike Doise left a lasting impact on Southwest District and the countless youth and families he supported throughout his life.
Kenneth Fontenot
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Kenneth Fontenot has been a dedicated leader and driving force behind the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo since joining the Board of Governors in 2006. He immediately took on the important responsibility of managing camper parking during the challenging years following Hurricane Rita, establishing a fair and efficient lottery system that served exhibitors and their families. His commitment to innovation later led to the implementation of an online camper reservation system in 2016, streamlining the process and improving accessibility for participants.
Throughout his years of service, Kenneth has been known for his hands-on leadership style and unwavering commitment to providing the best possible experience for exhibitors, contestants, and spectators. His dedication helped set a high standard for committee members and volunteers, ensuring the continued success and growth of the event.
As President from 2023 to 2025, Kenneth led several transformative initiatives that strengthened the organization's impact on youth and the community. Under his leadership, the rodeo ticket structure was redesigned to increase funding for scholarships and awards. Scholarship opportunities were significantly expanded. He also championed the creation of the BRODEO Special Needs Rodeo, providing individuals with special needs the opportunity to experience the excitement of rodeo while fostering inclusion and community involvement. Additionally, he guided the successful transition to a new rodeo production company, enhancing the experience for both contestants and spectators. Kenneth's leadership and vision have modernized operations, expanded opportunities for youth, and strengthened community engagement.
Through his servant leadership, innovation, and commitment to youth development, Kenneth Fontenot has left a lasting legacy on the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo and the generations of young people it serves.
Perry Vincent
Calcasieu Parish | Hall of Fame Inductee
Perry Vincent has been a dedicated member of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo Board of Directors since 2002, serving on numerous committees and playing a key role in the organization's growth and success. A longtime member of the Finance Committee, Perry co-chaired the 2022 rodeo ticketing and seating restructuring project, which resulted in a significant increase in ticket sales and revenue.
Committed to supporting youth and education, Perry has been actively involved with the Scholarship Committee, helping evaluate applicants and champion efforts to expand scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors. His leadership continues through new fundraising initiatives aimed at increasing scholarship support for future generations.
Beyond his service to Southwest District, Perry is a successful entrepreneur and community leader whose generosity and vision have made a lasting impact throughout Southwest Louisiana. His dedication to creating opportunities for youth and strengthening the organization exemplifies the spirit of the Southwest District Livestock Show & Rodeo.
